Gerhard Richter. Betty.
Richter is kind of a magician. Can you believe this is a painting? The way that he even creates a sort of soft-focus effect with the paint is quite incredible. Also, it’s another work that subverts expectations. In a traditional portrait, you would see this girl’s face but she turns to reveal the back of her head instead. To be honest, I don’t know exactly what Richter is trying to convey by doing this, but because it is a painting of his daughter my interpretation is that he’s trying to protect her while still paying her respect through this beautiful representation.
If I could own one contemporary painter’s work it would probably be Richter. His work is so impressive in person.
this painting still blows me away everytime i see it.
